ALTANA AG engages in the development, production, and distribution of specialty chemicals for the manufacture of paints and coatings for various applications worldwide. It operates in four divisions: Additives & Instruments, Effect Pigments, Electrical Insulation, and Coatings & Sealants. The Additives & Instruments division offers wetting and dispersing additives for the even distribution and stabilization of solids in liquids; surface aids, defoamers, and air-release additives, which eliminate air bubbles in coatings and plastics; and measuring and testing instruments to measure the surface properties of coatings and plastics. The Effect Pigments division produces and distributes metallic and pearlescent effect pigments, as well as metallic printing ink for applications in coatings, plastics, packaging, and in the cosmetics industries. Its products include aluminum, iron flake, gold bronze, pearlescent, cosmetic, and zinc pigments; pellets; printing inks; and metal pigment coatings. The Electrical Insulation division develops, produces, and distributes electrical insulation materials, impregnating and finishing varnishes, resins, and casting compounds for use electric motors, household appliances, car engines, generators, transformers, capacitors, televisions, wind power wheels, computers, lamps, circuit boards, and sensors. The Coatings & Sealants division provides products for the printing and packaging industries, such as coatings and sealing materials used in packaging materials for food, drug, and cosmetics products, including bottle caps, can end sealants, bags, foils, drug blisters, boxes, multi-item packaging, packaging labels, as well as covers for magazines and electronic storage media. The company was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in Wesel, Germany. ALTANA AG is a subsidiary of Skion GmbH. As of February 2, 2010, Altana AG was taken private.
